An experiment in silence

Awareness is the practice of “listening”.  Listening to your inner wisdom deeply buried under layers of thoughts, beliefs, worries.  Practicing silence means making a commitment to take a certain amount of time to simply Be – no talking, no reading, no TV or listening to the radio.  If you never allow yourself the opportunity to experience silence, you are fuelling turbulence in your internal dialogue.

Stillness is the first requirement to realizing all your desires, because in stillness lies creativity and wisdom.  Imagine throwing a little stone into a still pond and watching it ripple. Then, after a while, when the ripples setle down, perhaps you throw another little stone.  When you do not experience stillness – your mind is like a turbulent ocean – you could through the Empire State Building into it, and you wouldn’t notice a thing!Today, introduce 5 minutes of being silent, and repeat this 3 times during the day.  You will not be able to “turn off your thoughts” so don’t beat yourself up if initially they seem even louder in your head.  Just notice with interest.
